Failed Back Surgery Syndrome is a term used when a patient continues to have chronic back or leg pain even after undergoing one or more spinal surgeries. It doesn’t always mean the surgery went wrong—but rather that the expected relief wasn’t achieved, or new issues developed postoperatively.

Common symptoms include:

• Persistent or worsening back, neck, or leg pain
• Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the limbs
• Limited mobility or function
• Dependency on pain medications
• Recurrence of disc herniation or spinal instability
• Causes of Failed Spine Surgery
• There are several reasons why spinal surgery may not provide lasting relief:
• Incomplete decompression of nerves
• Improper diagnosis or surgical approach
• Scar tissue (epidural fibrosis) causing nerve irritation
• Recurrent disc prolapse or new disc degeneration
• Spinal instability or failed fusion
• Adjacent segment disease (degeneration at levels above/below surgery site)
• Infection or implant-related issues
